My name is Roberto, and I am a Person Who Stopped Stuttering (PWSS). I am originally from Cuba, but I now live in Florida, USA. I am 23 years old, and for as long as I can remember, I have struggled with stuttering.
My experience with stuttering was quite unique: I spoke both Spanish and English, but my stutter was significantly worse in Spanish. Since with my family we mainly speak in Spanish to each other, I experienced most of my stuttering at home, which was incredibly frustrating. At work, as a car mechanic, I spoke mostly in English with my clients, where I rarely stuttered, making my speech challenges even more confusing and frustrating.
For years, I searched for solutions, but nothing truly helped. However, in 2024, everything changed. While looking for ways to overcome my speech impediment, I came across Lee Lovett and the World Stop Stuttering Association (WSSA). I immediately bought his book, How to Stop Stuttering & Love Speaking, and for the first time, I felt like someone truly understood my problem. Lee explained, in simple terms, why we stutter and how to overcome it. Finally, I had hope. If so many others had stopped stuttering, why couldn’t I? Without hesitation, I joined WSSA.
At the beginning of December 2024, I began therapy sessions with Javier, a Certified Stuttering Therapist and a former stutterer himself. Since Javier is from Spain, all our sessions were in Spanish, which was exactly what I needed. He taught me the techniques I needed to practice daily, and within the first week, my speech started improving. However, after a couple of sessions, some personal issues affected my mood, and I stopped my daily routine. My speech worsened, and I felt like I was slipping back into my old habits. Fortunately, after my next session with Javier, I regained my focus, and my speech got back on track. From that point on, I remained consistent and committed.
By late January 2025—less than two months after starting—I had stopped having embarassing stuttering incidents and became a PWSS. I had finally conquered my stutter. I now know that I will never appear speech-disabled again because I have mastered WSSA’s “Neuroscience Method to Stop Stuttering.” But my journey doesn’t stop here. My next goal is to eliminate the residual fears and anxiety tied to speaking and to learn to love speaking everywhere. To achieve this, I plan to join Toastmasters and continue refining my speech skills.
I am incredibly grateful to WSSA and their amazing, supportive community of ex-stutterers and those fast on their way to becoming ex-stutterers. Their weekly Speech Club meetings, Group Practice sessions, the resources available in their StopStutter mobile app, and the help of my therapist, Javier, have all played a crucial role in my transformation. If I was able to stop stuttering, then I truly believe that anyone can do it too.
To those still struggling with stuttering: do not give up. There is a proven way to stop stuttering, and WSSA has all the tools and support you need. Take control of your speech, and soon enough, you’ll be sharing your own success story—just like I am today.
