Lee’s book is a gift to anyone who has struggled with stuttering. I’ve been a stutterer for more than 30 years, and only within the last 12 months began making it my mission to eradicate this behavior from my life. Lee is only the second person I’ve found who has self-cured, and I’ve been working with him now for about a month. Don’t listen to what the members of stuttering internet forums like on Reddit might say – stuttering can be overcome. And permanently. After 12 months working with Jeffrey Gurian (the other person who cured himself), Lee’s methods are the perfect compliment to take me to the final stage of my cure. This book unpacks the methods to learn to stop stuttering. I.e., you must avoid stuttering if you want to stop stuttering. To do this, Lee teaches what he terms “crutches” to avoid a stutter. The important bit here is that the crutch is a temporary support process that lets the stutterer hear their voice fluently and not stutter. To get more time hearing oneself fluent, he recommends reading out loud. This (reading out loud) has been the biggest tool to help me improve over the last year. It sounds simple, but is quite difficult to make time for and commit to. Finally, Lee (like Jeffrey) advocates using self-affirmations to change how the stutterer actually thinks. If you told me this 5 years ago I would have laughed and said it is silly. But the proof is in the results – both for myself and the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of people Lee has helped. Without question, the affirmations work. What you tell yourself is your reality. And humans will move heaven and earth to conform to their impression of themselves. Make no mistake: affirmations work. Combined with reading out loud and the crutches, the stutterer can begin making stuttering a thing of the past. But, and here’s another big part of this: stuttering is a symptom, it’s not the actual problem. We can stop stuttering, but we also need to unpack and move past whatever the actual underlying problem is (e.g., fear, anxiety, etc.) This work isn’t easy. I’ve worked like hell for a year, but the progress in my speech and attitude are nothing short of incredible. I’m 95% fluent in all environments, happier, significantly more optimistic and friendly, etc., and combined with Jeffrey’s approach and Lee’s approach, the light of perfect fluency is very clearly visible at the end of the road. -Dr. Joe D.
